Vieja Synspilum (Redhead Cichlid)

Scientific Name: Vieja melanurus (formerly Vieja synspilum)
Common Names: Redhead Cichlid, Quetzal Cichlid, Synspilum Cichlid

Description:
The Redhead Cichlid is a large, colorful Central American cichlid known for its striking mix of reds, oranges, blues, and metallic hues — with the signature reddish-orange "head" being the standout feature. As they mature, their colors intensify, making them one of the most beautiful large cichlids available.

Tank Requirements:

  • Tank Size: 75 gallons minimum (larger for adults or breeding pairs)

  • Temperature: 75°F - 82°F (24°C - 28°C)

  • pH: 7.0 - 8.0

  • Water Hardness: Moderate to hard

Temperament:
Semi-aggressive, especially when breeding. Can be kept with other large, robust Central or South American cichlids. Avoid small or timid tankmates.

Diet:
Omnivorous. Accepts high-quality pellets, flakes, frozen, and live foods. Fresh vegetables and occasional protein-rich treats will enhance their color and health.

Size:
Up to 12-14 inches (30-35 cm) full grown.

Lifespan:
10-15 years with proper care.

Special Notes:

  • Requires excellent filtration and frequent water changes.

  • Provide plenty of swimming space with rocks, driftwood, and hiding spots.

  • They dig — secure plants or avoid delicate live plants.

    To qualify for our Live Arrival Guarantee, the following conditions must be met:

    1. Proof Required – A clear photo or video of the DOA (dead on arrival) fish inside the unopened original bag must be emailed within 2 hours of delivery.

    2. Correct Address Only – The package must be shipped to the correct address provided at checkout. The guarantee is void if sent to a forwarding address.

    3. First Delivery Attempt – Someone must be present to receive the package on the first delivery attempt. If not, the live arrival guarantee is void.

    🔁 Refunds are issued for the cost of the fish only. Shipping fees are non-refundable.
